Combining best-in-class packaging with ‘just in time’ deliveries
Combining best-in-class packaging with ‘just in time’ deliveries
Research Machines Plc is a major supplier of software, services and computer systems to UK education. Suttons Performance Packaging was invited to tender for the Research Machines packaging contract towards the end of 2001.
Rather than just treating the project as a ‘costing exercise’ and copying the existing pack designs, we wanted to take the opportunity to demonstrate our in-house design skills with solutions that not only looked good and were extremely simple to use, they introduced innovations in material utilisation with polyethylene composite packaging.
In addition to our design flair, we also wanted to offer a value-added service by improving supply chain efficiencies for the client.
Due to a lack of storage space the client had a temporary structure in the Goods In car park to accommodate their packaging deliveries. Their existing supplier was making 2 deliveries per week to maintain agreed minimum stock levels of all product lines.
Firstly, the new packaging solutions were extensively drop tested at Sealed Air to ensure that they were totally compliant with the clients’ transit packaging stipulations.
Secondly, our supply proposal was totally service based. It worked on the principal that orders placed before 11.00am would be delivered at 8.00am the following day using our wholly owned logistics fleet.
As a result, Suttons were awarded the packaging tender and started making routine daily call-off deliveries in March 2002.
Our joined-up thinking around supply chain management married to our innovative, new pack designs has reduced the customer’s overall spend on packaging by more than 20% and our next day deliveries have become the norm.
Our added value approach means were are constantly reviewing pack designs, materials innovation, value analysis and customer satisfaction levels to ensure we never rest on our laurels.

EAF (UK) Limited are in the field of service parts supply and inventory management solutions to both OEM and Service companies. They are one of the few organisations worldwide that can provide IT service parts across every platform. We are the sole packaging supplier to the Wokingham operation.
This is an extremely dynamic service environment handling a vast product range on a daily basis, all of which require protective transport packaging. The physical variation across the product range excludes the use of bespoke packaging for each SKU and therefore the design challenge was to find a flexible pack format with interchangeable elements to accommodate the variations in product design.
Suttons have been successful in providing EAF with a flexible range of pack designs that accommodate the majority of products. In addition, we encouraged an on-site trial installation of a Sealed Air SpeedyPacker Moulding System to protect a number of unusual product lines that didn’t work within the main packaging solution. The SpeedyPacker Moulding system is an on-line void fill cushioning system that dispenses an Instapak foam-filled bag that expands to create a protective cushion around the product to be shipped.
After a short trail period the benefits of the SpeedyPacker system were self evident and the system was procured and fully installed in 2007. EAF now has a system capable of providing the optimum protection for non-standard ‘difficult items’ and have found it the perfect solution for their busy distribution centre.

Towards the end of 2006, Suttons Performance Packaging were invited to quote for the supply of packaging for a new product range for Malvern Instruments. An initial design concept had been originated by a design consultancy working on behalf of Malvern Instruments. Our investigation of the proposed packaging highlighted a number of concerns, in particular the weight of the product and our recommendation that it would require a ‘G’ rated cushion pack to provide the necessary protection during shipment.
Malvern were receiving very large and cumbersome ‘foam in place’ moulds and although they were providing adequate product protection, they were too large for economic shipping, very expensive and because of the sheer volume of foam involved they monopolised the entire despatch area.
During the design and sampling phase of our work we proposed a new design using a Sealed Air Stratocell polyethylene foam. Using this cushioning material we were able to design a ‘G’ rated pack that dramatically reduced the overall size of the shipping carton.
Suttons were then asked to carry out a complete analysis of Malvern’s existing pack designs – and to suggest alternative designs and materials where applicable.
Over the following 12 months we developed alternatives to the existing ‘foam in place’ packs, which resulted in cost savings of over £8,000, together with an equally significant saving on shipping costs due to the reduction in pack volumes.
More recently, we were tasked in designing new packaging for the large ‘Morphologi’ unit. This is a heavy, fragile and complex product shipped with a vast array of accessories in the pack. The unit also has delicate external covers that need to be removed for transit but accommodated within the shipping packaging.
Prior to the new Suttons packaging solution coming on line, a number of Morphologi units had been shipped using Malvern’s own in house ‘foam in place’ system. All of these units were received damaged from export shipping. To date, over 50 Morphologi systems have been exported in the new Suttons packaging with no incidents of damage occurring in transit.
This pack was entered for the 2008 Star Pack awards and received an impressive Bronze Award in the Business to Business Category.

Pack testing to ISTA 1A from a ‘one stop shop’ supplier.
Pack testing to ISTA 1A from a ‘one stop shop’ supplier.
Fluke Precision Measurement is a manufacturer of precision electronic test equipment and a long established customer of Suttons Performance Packaging. We supply them with a wide range of performance cushion packs which have all been designed and tested to conform with the International Safe Transit Association Procedure 1A (ISTA 1A).
In 2007, as part of a routine price ‘benchmarking’ exercise, a competitor put us under financial pressure with an extremely competitive tender. Although this competitor had their own drop testing facilities, they were unable to offer a ‘free of charge’ ISTA 1A certification drop test in an approved design centre. Whilst cost reductions were tempting, Fluke were reluctant to compromise their pack testing specification.
Suttons recognised that Fluke were buying packaging consumables (adhesive tape, bubble wrap and strapping etc.) from other suppliers. Our proposal was to be a one-stop-shop supplier for all their packaging requirements, saving money on transportation and administration.
We were able to put together a mutually agreeable price package for the supply of the existing performance cushion packs, a range of spares cartons and the packaging consumables. Fluke were presented with a solution which had the cumulative effect of reducing their supplier base, whilst improving the service levels on the supply of packaging consumables.
Since the beginning of 2008, we have been the sole supplier to Fluke for all their packaging requirements, making all deliveries on a ‘just in time’ basis. We are also working very closely with their engineering staff on potential cost reduction redesigns of existing packs, whilst maintaining their ISTA 1A certification.
